Throughout 2013 we worked with the Experience Team at Wasserman and food artists Bompas and Parr to develop the world’s first ever multi-sensory fireworks display, taking place on New Year’s Eve as part of the Mayor of London and Vodafone sponsored New Year’s Eve fireworks celebrations.
What started out as an abstract idea came to life over a 6-months period, with the team at Quantum being responsible for the dispersal of flavour based special effects in time with the main firework display. We were tasked with creating a fully synchronised experience for 50,000 people standing along Victoria Embankment.
We delivered 6 fruit flavoured mists, orange smoke filled bubbles, peach snow and banana flavoured edible confetti.
Designed by our in house engineer, 80 x Atom 60 machines lined the road to deliver a wall of scent. From design to assembly, the machines were tested to their limits. Making sure they were not only safe for the public but that they could also take the strain of the unpredictable British weather.
Our smoke filled bubble machines, originally designed for Katie Melua and then developed for the Olympic Opening Ceremony, were further developed to disperse Seville orange flavouring.
We provided snow machines that, when fired in time with a peach mist, created the amazing effect of peach flavoured snow.
Finally, we worked closely with the team at Bompas and Parr to create a dispersal mechanism for an entirely new product, edible confetti. Various methods were tried and tested, the most effective being our electrically fired confetti cannons. Unfortunately, on the night the weather wasn’t on our side and the decision was made to cut the effect from the show. However, the show was still a great success and we had an amazing reaction from crowds attending on the night and worldwide across global media.
The project was part of Vodafone Firsts, an engaging platform that inspires and enables people to do remarkable things for the first time using Vodafone mobile technology. We were proud to be a part of this and the activation brought many firsts for us as well as an amazing opportunity to collaborate with a great team of specialists to deliver a unique experience for 50,000 people.
