The MTV VMA’s was a fantastic platform to showcase what our (then) fledgling US branch could do. Held at the Forum in Inglewood, CA, in the summer of 2014, some of the biggest names in the music industry took to the stage
Ariana Grande opened the night alighting from a smoking spaceship with the help of our CO₂ jets and spark devices, and was swiftly followed Taylor Swift with her Great Gatsby inspired “Shake It Off” routine. We gave her a sparkling finale with mines, comets and jets exploding from either side of the stage, squiggly gerbs fired from 4 purpose built frames plus a final hit of 20 ft jets located in 24 positions around the velodrome.
Other effects included CO₂ jets and pyro for Usher, a romantic haze for boy band 5 Seconds of Summer and low smoke for Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora’s ‘Black Widow.’
To finish the show, the lady everyone had been talking about, Beyoncé took to the stage with her 15 minute medley. To further enhance her well deserved accolade for lifetime achievement, we provided low smoke to start followed by a smoke infused effect for her racy posing and pole dancing routine.
We were delighted to have been part of this iconic annual event. Industry professionals spoke particularly highly of the overall design concept and the integration of special effects in to visually dramatic performances!
